Attorney Patrick Douglas has been appointed to the Nominating Committee for 2018 for the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association. The purpose of this Committee is to develop a recommendation of people to serve as Officers, Executive Committee Members, and State Vice Presidents for the upcoming year.

The Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association was first organized in 1922 and is comprised of 145-member organization includes levee boards, drainage districts, municipalities, port and harbor commissions, other State agencies and businesses throughout the Mississippi River Watershed which is 41% of the United States of America. The Association’s President and Vice Presidents are members of the Congress of the United States.

The principal objective of the Association is the support and sponsorship of the Mississippi River Valley Flood Control and Navigation interests to protecting the nation’s flood control system, by assuring re-investment in water infrastructure for the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

Attorney Patrick Douglas has become a member of the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association.   The Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association was first organized in 1922 and is comprised of 145-member organization includes levee boards, drainage districts, municipalities, port and harbor commissions, other State agencies and businesses throughout the Mississippi River Watershed which is 41% of the United States of America.  The Association is comprised of a large group of individuals who are businessmen, property owners, conservationists, farmers, attorneys, doctors, wildlife enthusiasts, engineers, accountants, environmentalists, civil servants, and elected officials from all political parties that share common problems and concerns including flood control, navigation, channel improvements, and major drainage in the Mississippi River Watershed which impact the welfare and prosperity of the nation.  Patrick represents a number of local drainage and levee districts in Southeast Missouri.  The Association’s  President and Vice Presidents are members of the Congress of the United States. The principal objective of the Association is the support and sponsorship of the Mississippi River Valley Flood Control and Navigation interests to protecting the nation’s flood control system, by assuring re-investment in water infrastructure for the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

As you are no doubt aware, a tentative settlement in the amount of $1.51 Billion has been reached between Syngenta Corporation and Farmers who have been damaged economically as a result of Syngenta’s premature marketing of two genetically modified strains of corn Agrisure Viptera® and Agrisure Duracade™ that were outlawed in China. The preliminary settlement is pending in the multi-district litigation in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas.

If you are a member of the class eligible to receive recovery from the settlement, you must file your claims with the Court-Ordered Settlement administrator no later than October 12, 2018.  The official website for processing your claims is found here, or you can go directly to the website at www.cornseedsettlement.com.   You can print the claim forms, or file them directly on-line.  Please note that any crop share landlords that you have MUST FILE THEIR OWN CLAIM Form.  Please inform any such landlords and provide them with this information as well.

Patrick Douglas (left) and John Cozean (right) recently obtained a summary judgment in favor of a Firm Client in the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in a product liability case.

The Firm is now on the approved panel counsel list for Healthcare Services Group, a large insurer of Hospitals and Physicians in Missouri.

Firm News June 2015

The firm recently was named this Spring to the Missouri Defense Panel for TEAMHealth, which contracts to provide ER physicians to Missouri Hospitals.

Shaun Hanschen recently argued the case of Parr, et al. v. Breeden, et al. in the Missouri Supreme Court. The Court’s decision is expected to determine the fate of co-employee liability cases in Missouri. Attorneys in the firm recently represented some of the shareholders in the liquidation of an agri-business in the Missouri Bootheel. The firm supervised the sale of assets through a competitive bidding process. The assets sold included a cotton gin and approximately 1200 acres of farmland.

Attorney Patrick Douglas testified this Spring before the Missouri House Transportation Committee to advocate for improvements in state statutes governing levee districts.

Attorneys Joseph Blanton and John Cozean tried a 7 day medical malpractice case this January in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri and obtained a defense verdict for the firm’s client physician. The case involved a significant injury and was defended with expert testimony from a leading cancer physical medicine and rehabilitation expert from Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City.

Blanton, Rice, Nickell, Cozean and Collins attorneys have represented several shareholders in the division of a three office Southeast Missouri professional practice into three separate companies. The division of the company was accomplished through negotiation and without litigation.

Attorney Joseph Blanton has served as an arbitrator during 2014 and 2015 in the division of a large industrial construction contracting company into two new companies. The parties have presented numerous legal issues for resolution by the Arbitrator on an expedited and cost-effective basis when compared to litigation.
