SIKESTON—Shaun D. Hanschen of Sikeston was recently recognized with two distinguished awards for his legal work in Missouri.

Hanschen was awarded the David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award by The Missouri Bar Foundation during the Missouri Bar Annual Meeting on September 26 in St. Louis. He also was named as one of 45 Up & Coming attorneys by Missouri Lawyers Media on October 12 during an awards luncheon at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

The David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award recognizes outstanding achievement in appellate practice by young lawyer members of The Missouri Bar. It is named after the late Judge Dixon, whose tenacity, professionalism and judicial skills epitomize outstanding appellate practice.
Missouri Lawyers Media recognized Hanschen as one of 45 Up & Coming attorneys in Missouri who demonstrate professional excellence while making a positive impact on the profession and community early in their careers.

Hanschen is a member of Blanton, Nickell, Collins, Douglas and Hanschen, LLC. He has extensive litigation and appellate experience in Missouri and before the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals.

Hanschen is a graduate of Jackson High School and attended the University of Missouri where he earned a B.S. in Political Science with a minor in Spanish. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended law school at the University of Missouri where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review and the recipient of the award for Highest Scholastic Achievement among third year law students. Hanschen was also chosen as a member of the Order of the Coif. Following graduation, Shaun clerked for the Hon. Phillip R. Garrison of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District. He is licensed in Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

SIKESTON—Carole Hillis, BSN, RN, was honored as a 2018 Unsung Legal Hero in the Paralegal category by Missouri Lawyers Weekly.

Carole Hillis is an in-house, nurse paralegal for Blanton, Nickell, Collins, Douglass and Hanschen, LLC. Hillis has a broad range of clinical experience that is very valuable to her firm. Since joining the firm, Hillis has had over a decade of experience in evaluation of complex medical issues in medical legal cases. As you are no doubt aware, a tentative settlement in the amount of $1.51 Billion has been reached between Syngenta Corporation and Farmers who have been damaged economically as a result of Syngenta’s premature marketing of two genetically modified strains of corn Agrisure Viptera® and Agrisure Duracade™ that were outlawed in China. The preliminary settlement is pending in the multi-district litigation in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas.

If you are a member of the class eligible to receive recovery from the settlement, you must file your claims with the Court-Ordered Settlement administrator no later than October 12, 2018.  The official website for processing your claims is found here, or you can go directly to the website at www.cornseedsettlement.com.   You can print the claim forms, or file them directly on-line.  Please note that any crop share landlords that you have MUST FILE THEIR OWN CLAIM Form.  Please inform any such landlords and provide them with this information as well.

Firm attorney Joseph C. Blanton recently sat for an interview by Litigation Commentary, a publication of Litigation Counsel of America, the trial lawyer honorary society limited to the top ¼ of one percent of litigation attorneys nationally.   The interview dealt with a wide variety of topics, including the history of the Firm and observations and lessons learned during a thirty year career as a litigation attorney.  The interview is available here.

Lewis Blanton Retires

After a legal and judicial career that spanned over five decades, Lewis Blanton is officially retiring. His retirement was effective January 26, 2018. Both as citizens and members of the firm, we salute his service and appreciate very much his wisdom and general good nature.

Lewis will continue to maintain a personal office at the firm.

October 2017 News

Joseph Blanton, Bryan Nickell and Diedre Peters represented a St. Louis area client in a contested arbitration proceeding in St. Louis County. The Firm’s client received an Arbitration Award of all of the damages claimed.

Joseph Blanton served as a member of the trial practice faculty during the Fall Meeting of Fellows of Litigation Counsel of America held on October 18-20, 2017 in Bal Harbour, FL. Blanton spoke on the process of preparing a Closing Argument. Litigation Counsel of America is an invitation only honorary society of trial attorneys limited to the top ½% of litigation attorneys.

July 2017 News

Attorneys Joseph Blanton and Diedre Peters recently obtained favorable rulings from the U. S. District Court in Cape Girardeau dismissing the firm’s client from two professional liability suits.

Attorneys Tom Collins and Bryan Nickell received a favorable ruling in a permanent total disability worker’s compensation case in July.  

Attorney Joseph Blanton obtained a confidential settlement for a firm client in a premises liability case involving the construction of stairs in June 2016.  

The firm was recently engaged in new matters involving the construction of a well for a rural water district, and several transactions relating to the sale of power and the leasing of fiber optic system by a municipal utility.

November 2016 News

Joseph Blanton and John Cozean along with attorneys from Shook, Hardy and Bacon of Kansas City successfully represented a large financial services company in defeating an attempt to certify a class action in Wayne County, Missouri.

Attorney Shaun Hanschen has been admitted to practice in the State of Arkansas. Firm attorneys are now admitted to practice in Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Michigan, Kansas and Arkansas as well as numerous Federal District Courts, U. S. Circuit Courts of Appeals and the U. S. Supreme Court and U. S. Tax Court.

Attorney Joseph Blanton has been named as the representative of Legal Services of Southern Missouri on the Missouri Statewide IOLTA Board. This Board is responsible for allocating the earnings from Missouri attorney IOLTA accounts among the Legal Services programs in Missouri.
